Retaining Walls come in all shapes and size, but the usual types that a homeowner might consider are timber, modular block, stacked stone , cinder block and concrete. The purposes of a wall are many; aesthetics, erosion control, support of a structure, and of course to hold back tons of saturated soil pressure. Consider adding a terraced wall to increase the usable space of your steeply sloped property. BLSH&E can inspect your existing wall if it is showing signs of bulging, leaning, cracks, or uneven settlement. Should the need for a new wall become necessary, I will:
Coordinate/conduct a topographical survey to determine the ground elevations, contours, and grade (steepness) at the project location. Note: a boundary survey is also necessary as part of the application submission documents. Ground contours always need to be modified in order to accommodate the recommended structure. This entails re-grading the property, and may require the preparation of a soil transport application (and possible approval from the local Soil Conservation District). BLSH&E designs the retaining wall and provides calculations in support, prepares the necessary plans, details, and specifications; then submits to municipal engineer for review and approval. Typically, due to the height of the proposed wall, a fence is also required along the perimeter. Upon approval I can assist the homeowner with contractor selection. The municipality may also require certain certifications as to assurances that the wall was built according to plan and its intended purpose. To that extent, construction oversight services may also be provided to perform various inspections to ensure the project conforms to the plan, to approve contractor requests for payment, and to sign off on the final punch list. An “as-built” drawing (plan showing final conditions as actually constructed) may also be necessary.
Obviously the field is wide open as to the type, length, height, etc of the wall, but typical engineering fees for design range from $800-$2000.
